Singapore 2018 May (17)

Chinese congee  Rice congee, roasted duck, savory garnishes  served with fruits

  1. obaKoba-sann,

You prefer Japanese-like meal when you fly by United.
Without Japanese-like one, you select Chinese congee.

The most important logic of your tendency is to draw attention of those who read habitually your blog, who are basically Japanese or Japan-implicated folks and who are able to look at and understand written words in Japanese, isn’t it ?
Therefore, you believe the readers are principally interested in the contents of the blog, but at the same time they’re also desiring knowledge about Japanese-like or Chinese-like meal by United.
And your speculation is truly correct, I think.
Furthermore, you can humorously and merrily call attention to why such meals are odd and not good enough, stood on your Japan-basis judgement.

Related to how the United’s meal is ‘edible’ (not ‘eatable’), sometimes such Japanese meals are edible and lower dangerous for you, though sometimes not.
You can’t consume some stuffs, e.g. Tsukemono, which should be the deceased organisms belonging to the vegetable in agitated rice bran.

Fundamentally speaking, United’s ‘World’s cheese selection/International cheese assortment’ might be destructive.
Though, occasionally (or by mistake?), the features of cheeses were made better when your flights left from GVA, SYD or SIN, judging from your past articles.
The cheeses served on UA002 you showed us were supposed to be specifically and somewhat edible.
Since most of the foods including cheeses are imported to Singapore from other countries, esp. from EU, I imagine.

    1. Best Denki sensei,

I am delighted you learned the common word “edible.”

I preorder Japanese meal on United 837 and 838 because there are the only flights serving Japanese meal and I board, unless otherwise I occasionally fly over KIX or HND. But I also request Japanese meal on ANA 7 and 8 because of the quality is way better than Western options, and the aircraft is equipped with rice cooker! (what a …).
Same thing on United 1 and 2. Chinese congees are being served on the flights for China, Hong Kong, Chinese Taiwan (www) and Singapore where the Chinese populations are the vast majority. Then, Singapore flights are the only chance to have that rice porridge. I think my better half is having congee on Hong Kong flights as well.

Your guess is absolutely right. I often write “Presentation on my blog is everything,” I usually choose the most attractive meal option for my blog readers with my best guess. Although I cannot eat those dead and faded stinky fermented vegetables called “tsukemono” from my childfood. My friends called me 非国民 because I can’t eat tsukemono, and then voila! I am NOT Japanese now!! (LOL) Nevertheless, some people like Swiss Dr. told me shame on me because I ate and loved whale meats… I certainly experienced the first generation immigrants’ distresses.
Oh, by the way. I have some exceptions on tsukemonos. I DO eat pickles in hamburgers, I love hana-rakkyo and fukujin-duke if it’s served with Japanese-style curry rice, or I prefer to have takuan with katsu-don, the egg pouched pork chops over rice. (but I don’t eat shiba-duke is accompanied)

United’s meal service is not as bad as Delta or American, in my opinion. However, Houston and Chicago are always cutting the costs, the results of cheese course is quite miserable. On the other hand, serving cheeses after the main dish is essential for the people who raised in old European customs so it still exists but now being served with desserts together. As a result, abandoned poor quality cheese plates are always available as mid-flight snack which is sometimes fun for me.
The entire food self support ratio in Singapore is hidden but easily guess it’s one digit for sure. Amongst those imported foods, I don’t think Singapore has cows for fresh milk and the factories for fermentation processes, all the cheese or dairy products are imported. Then I always find the yogurts in Singapore are all Swiss made, I can expect the most of daily items are from Switzerland. That’s why the United 2 SIN/SFO serves acceptable quality of cheese. GVA, ZRH and SYD are the same situation but the flights from EZE to IAH, Argentinean cheeses are not so good unfortunately, and I don’t remember the cheese quality on the flight from CdG to SFO either.
Cheese after the main dish wasn’t so important for me, as a person from Japanese civilizations, but I got brain washed by Westerners mostly by Swiss doctor… now I am released from that bondage but I can’t change my behavior or culinary basis.

p.s. I am heading to Singapore tonight and the stay over there will be with Oh-My san together, so I apologize in advance if my reply comments are delayed or missing.
