Sydney 2018 June (6)

  1. obaKoba-sann,

You do adore Xiao Long Baos by Din Tai Fung with the moist, evaporating cares.
It’s a conventional lunch in Sydney for you, isn’t it ?

The odors of Xiao Long Baos may be powerful and deep in taste.
You tested the truffle dumpling ($5.00 PER DUMPLING !?) whose odors must be powerful and deep in taste in spite of extremity in price.
It is to be expected from a truffle dumpling for you, and tbh it is well worth a highlight of your visit to the restaurant and a unique alteration from the regular fare, I imagine.

    1. Best Denki sensei…

May I point out two English phrases you used?
      1. The word “conventional” is mostly being used for written language and suffixes with “meals,” lunch is not so commonly combined together due to my experiences.
      2. Xiao Long Baos have flavors or aromas, but not “odors” for me. Usually, the word “odor” is being used for something stinky. If you used as “the odor of durian,” it’s absolutely correct unless otherwise you are addicted with durian. Therefore, this sentence reads and translates you hate Xiao Long Bao…

Now back to Din Tai Fung.

They are Xiao Long Baos version of McDonald’s or Red Lobster. The franchised restaurants are around the world even in California. We have one in South Bay but I’ve been to there just once with Frurun-san when Din Tai Fung San Jose opened and too many customers shown up, they started taking reservations. When I saw it on the Fox News (which I stopped watching after Trump regime*) I immediately booked San Jose restaurant once by online. Since then I stopped visiting there. Having good juicy Xiao Long Baos without making lines is the key for me (or Oh-My san and Fururun-san as well, I believe).

*Another English lesson: the word “regime” is being used as negative, mean and evil “administration.” For example; I use as “Obama Administration” and “Trump regime.”

And yes. A “Pork with Black truffle Xiao Long Bao” costs US$5 at San Jose, Au$5 at Sydney and S$5 at Singapore. The currency rate as of August 2018 is roughly 1.00 : 1.34 : 1.36, therefore Singapore restaurants are the most “affordable” ones if I do the simple math. And then the quality of black truffle is almost the same all over the world Din Tai Fung. Because it’s steamed and heated up, the aroma of truffle enhanced very appropriately and yes, it’s yummy.

I heard there is a Din Tai Fung restaurant in Tokyo. In Shiodome, Shinjuku 高島屋 and Ebisu. However, what I heard from people who tried all of those Tokyo restaurants are negative… especially for the cost performance. Therefore I never tried Din Tai Fung in Tokyo yet. Sensei, when you have an opportunities staying at Conrad, please try Shiodome restaurant. Or Ebisu restaurant when you stay at Westin, and get back to me with your opinion, PLEASE? I believe the price doesn’t matter for you since you are a Centurion® Card holder!! :))

  2. obaKoba-sann,

Thank you for some tips in English.
I know my English ability is not good enough.

BTW, what a coincidence it is that you mentioned a Din Tai Fung restaurant in Tokyo !
In fact, I'm going to Narashino to do some errands there, and will stay at Conrad tokyo tonight.
I'll never fail to visit Shiodome branch for tomorrow's lunch and try a “Pork with Black truffle Xiao Long Bao”, which costs 2,916 JPY for 6 truffles !!
I'll report you later, though if I fail to visit, please forgive me in advance...

    1. Wow, that's a quick reply, sensei.

Will you visit Narashino?? That's a place of middle of nowhere. Just the rest of people (means, there are bunch of people who will never receive an invitation from American Express Centurion like you) live there...

So, the Truffle 小籠包 costs ONLY US$4 (USD1 = JPY111)?? (w/o tax for comparison)
That's the cheapest, well, most affordable truffle ones I found so far.
Then, you should try 10 of truffle ones, please.

However, actually, my most favorite flavor is "crab butter." Please try 蟹粉小籠包 as well.

    2. By the way, sensei.

Then, change at Shinagawa to 総武横須賀線快速(普通グリーン車あり)will be the best, changing at Tokyo station is simply a HELL!

Please ignore thsi message if you take ANA.
You may take 京急→都営浅草→京成 direct then.
(But please don't take JAL before I'm passing away.)

  3. obaKoba-san,

I'm killing time in ANA lounge at OKJ.
After check-in at Conrad, I'll take Keikyu accoding to your advice.
And I'll order crab one along with truffle.
    Thx !

    2. Oh, I'm a bit confused...

      > After check-in at Conrad, I'll take Keikyu

After Conrad?? You will already be in Shiodome, aren't you!?
Then you should take 総武横須賀線快速木更津行 w/普通グリーン車 from Shimbashi to Tsudanuma.
(There are several destinations but 木更津 or 君津 are the best because it's heading to my home town. (lol))

  4. obaKoba-san,

I took Yurikamome at Shiodome to Shinbashi, changed to JR to Tsudanuma enjoying Green Car.
I got off at Tsudanuma, took Keisei Bus to Nicidai-Mimomi.
Finally, I managed to see my uncle living at the Home for the aged.

I'm awfully sorry not to try truffle at Shiodome branch today.
Another errand will keep me from doing it.

Please allow me not keep my words.
Though, I'll try at next chance.

    1. Best Denki sensei,

That’s pity you couldn’t try the truffle or crab xiao long bao. Please consider next time.

And I am surprised your uncle’s home supposed to be walking distance from my parents live. Nichidai-Mimomi is next to Keisei Okubo where the closest station from my parents’ home is, and I often saw Nihon Daigaku Corporation campus nearby where should be the Mimomi campus.

So, again, it’s a small world. Your uncle is my parents’ neighborhood!

  5. obaKoba-san,

I'm now in the ANA lounge at HND on my way home.
Again, I'd like to apologize not to have tried truffle nor crab one.

In fact, my uncle used to be the professor of Nihon University, Dept. of Seisan-Kogaku.
And my younger brother graduated from the Dept., belonging to my uncle's research group.

Moreover, I was also working for a research at Suidobashi for a few months, commuting from my brother's apartment in Narashino.
I used to have a quick bite at Lotteria in Tsudanuma Sta.

    Far away and long ago...

    1. Best Denki sensei,

That’s really a short visit to your uncle’s home, and I now know what your uncle was. University professors are always a “fun” like my Swiss friend was. The College of Seisan Kogaku is relatively new but their campus area also has Toho University where our friends went to Pharmaceutical or Science colleges (their Medical school is separately located in Omori, Tokyo) hence Narashino has certain population of students, and the station areas are covered with cheap but big portion serving restaurants for the students of Nichidai and Toho My father told me he was living alone in Okubo area area when he was attending Waseda University (and then WWII ends, he moved to small fishermen’s town Futtsu where our family annex located, and he had encountered with my mom at there.).

And you used to eat at Lotteria Tsudanuma Station?? I also used to stop by there for ebi burger. The one I used was the side of Chiba Institute of Technology (CIT) resides. Now that Lotteria is permanently closed and the hamburger shop is on the other side, close to PARCO.

Now I know you are familiar with Tsudanuma. Next time in Tsudanuma, you also have to try 必勝軒 ramen shop just beyond CIT campus. The chef, Mr. Kobayashi, learned at 大勝軒 and their broth flavor changes daily which is a fun, except he is a bit chatty and keeps talking to their customers while he’s cooking. (did you find any similarity with me? (lol)
