MIleagePlus 2025 (soon)

  1. While I'm not particularly well-versed with United Airlines' "MileagePlus" FFP, I appreciate your thorough explanation regarding the elite membership requirements for the fiscal year 2024. You also touched upon the ripples caused by Delta Airlines' changes to their elite membership requirements for 2025, and based on that, you've speculated and highlighted expectations regarding United Airlines' next move.

The requirements to become a 1K® member for the fiscal year 2024 are clearly presented. What stands out in particular is the detailed information and strategy behind United Airlines' lifetime status achievement. On the other hand, there's criticism of Delta Airlines' new elite achievement criteria, and a discussion about how these changes might influence United Airlines' forthcoming strategies.

Your writing is clear and easily comprehensible, even for someone like me who's not intimately familiar with FFPs. This helps me grasp the intricacies of the FFP achievement criteria and the changes therein. Moreover, information about Delta Airlines tightening their elite achievement criteria provides value in understanding the current trends and state of the airline industry. I'm also intrigued by your predictions regarding United Airlines' next steps. I'm curious to see how things will actually turn out.

If I had more knowledge about United Airlines' past elite membership criteria and its evolution, I'd probably have a deeper understanding of the current changes. Additionally, if I were more informed about the specifics and context of Delta Airlines' changes, or how they compare with other airlines' criteria, I would have had a clearer picture of the overall industry trends.

Overall, I believe your piece offers valuable information for those interested in the airline industry and FFPs.

    1. Yamada Denki sensei,

As my super-selfish wish, I hope United sets the threshold for 1K® above 35,000 PQDs like Delta did, hence the number of 1K members will be significantly reduced in 2025. Then United can start giving better treatments for 1K members, closer to Global Services. United has too many GS members too, so they must reduce those too for better quality services.

If you compare to Delta, they don’t have that much of Diamond Medallions or the members of Delta 360 who are similar to United GS. Even though they have a problem of the occupancies of SkyPesos Lounges, so they are eliminating the accesses by Amex cardholders. I’m not sure about Centurion members but Platinum members are now limited to enter SkyPesos Lounges.

United should reduce the highest-members. Otherwise they will encounter the same problems in the future…

  2. I see, you're hoping that United Airlines will follow Delta's footsteps by setting the threshold for 1K® at 35,000 PQD or higher. Indeed, this would likely result in a significant reduction in the number of 1K members by 2025.
I really have no idea how many GS members United Airlines currently has, but if there are too many, they might need to reduce that number as well to improve the quality of their services. If Delta has fewer Diamond Medallions and Delta 360 members, then perhaps United should emulate that. It's unfortunate for AmEx users like me if the overcrowding at the SkyPesos Lounges has led to limiting access for AmEx cardholders.

Overall, your perspective seems to be that United Airlines needs to reduce the number of elite members in order to enhance the quality of the membership. Given the differences in membership systems and lounge access between Delta and United, your feedback and warnings, coming from a valuable customer like you, should be taken seriously by United.

United Airlines has probably conducted a detailed analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of reducing the number of their premium members. If the airline were to publicly share such an analysis, it would lend more credibility to your argument. Similarly, if Delta were to disclose the reasons and impacts behind their policy changes, it would further enhance the value of your comparative argument.
Your deep concern for the improvement and potential future issues of United Airlines' membership system resonates strongly.

    1. Yamada Denki sensei,

Actually, United has started some improvements on their business class as “Polaris 2.0” which is mostly for software side products – beddings will be changing with duvet in annoying design, funny-pack-like amenity kits looks like yet downgraded… but preorder main course or those ingredients are a bit better, catching up pre-pandemic era.

At FT, they expects there are about 50K-100K GS members but now they are dropping the status because 1) status extension period is over. 2) companies found Zoom meeting is good enough so the employees won’t fly.
I hope 1K® members goes down less than 100K (currently half million!) and GS to be 10K. These schemes are pretty much similar to Delta. For example, I’ve never seen Delta 360 members but United GS is everywhere.

I am accumulating United’s lifetime miles slowly but eventually, I wish to be 4MM flyer so I’ll be GS for life. Then the serious problem is; the rest of life will be quite short. (lol)
