New Package

  1. Well, first of all, about the Kame Shizuku Kuro that we gratefully received, we opened it immediately after coming home yesterday. The first shocking thing was that the cork stopper was unusually large, and it was tightly closed probably for quality preservation. I tried my best to open it, but couldn't.
But if I look closely inside the box, there's a bamboo pick, and I insert it diagonally from above into the cork side, and lift it up like a lever... but it still doesn't open (sweat).
"I'm at a loss. It's hell not to be able to drink a masterpiece in front of me. Did Koba-san send this knowing this in advance? (lol)"
    That's what I thought.
Then, I changed my strategy and moved the insertion point a little bit and lifted it up... successfully opened! Oh, this is a masterpiece which needs the special ceremony before drinking (lol).
Finally, I scooped it up with the attached ladle and tasted it on the rocks. In comparison with the normal ( ? ) Kame Shizuku I received earlier, I'd say it's deeper and more refined. I'll enjoy it little by little.
By the way, the container, I observed it when I opened it, and it seems to be made of glass. I checked on the Kyoya Brewery's website, and it said "glass original container". Either way, it's a rare masterpiece.

By the way, you didn't just order this Filet-O-Fish from Uber Eats, did you? Were the containers for the other items you ordered the usual ones? If so, it's indeed a mystery why only the Filet-O-Fish container is this semi-spherical shape. When that mystery is solved (it might not be), please let me know.

    1. Yamada Denki sensei,

I am so sorry abou that cork stopper… but once you learned how to open it by the bundled bamboo fork, it will be very fruitful in the near future, I guarantee it.
Also, the emptied jar can be used for something, like pickled plums which I couldn’t recommend for the marble jar… was that 7 years ago already?

So far, you’ve got ‘appreciation’ labeled regular Kame Shizuku, organic one in turquoise blue, and then black sleek Kuro-chan. Due to Doi-sensei’s letter he doesn’t consume as quick as you do so I am just wondering which doctor is really a ‘drinker.’

And definitely you are right… at this part, I dislike the Internet – I can’t hide anything…
      > ガラス製のオリジナル容器は「甕」をデザインした形で
I usually don’t check the blurbs but the package designs, then the ‘chart’ on the bottom of explanation page, which explains Kuro-chan has more flavor but a bit deeper taste… so please check the chart and compare the flavors. But please note: this is a limited edition so I can’t buy it again even you strongly demand it. Sorry.

My better-half-san placed an order as usual, then other hamburgers – regular burgers are wrapped in parchments, DQP or Big Mac are in the box. Only Filet-O-Fish was in this weird half-sphere cardboard container… I don’t know what’s going on here. I even cannot find the same package over the Internet. McDonald’s in San Mateo maybe a guinea pig for testing new packages… very strange anyway. At least the sandwich itself tastes the same.

  2. I have to admit that the cork stopper of the Kame Shizuku Kuro made it difficult to open the container, but it seems that this has only heightened my anticipation to savor the shochu. Now that I have learned how to open it with the accompanying bamboo pick, I trust I will keep it safe for future use. Please note that this is not in anticipation of any additional high-quality shochu in a ceramic jar from you. Of course, this is assuming that there is someone other than you who would gift me such a high-end shochu in a ceramic jar (lol).

Ah, so I had previously received advice from you not to store pickled plums in an emptied marble-style jar. I recall that I had purchased such a jar from the Neiman Marcus mail-order service (i.e. Horchow) and had used one of them to store pickled plums. Unfortunately, the jar developed a salt bloom on its surface, and one day it suddenly cracked, causing a dreadful mess. I should have taken your advice to heart...

Since your decision to visit Okayama next week, we have received three types of Kame Shizuku, and also other high-quality shochu. If we were to suddenly disappear in the night... might you be the one to shoot us in the back someday?

As you can see from Dr. Doi's email and as I have already told you, he is the type to save the best for last, while I am the type to enjoy things at the beginning. I wonder if it's really okay for two doctors with such opposing personalities to work in the same clinic.
By the way, since we have never had a drinking contest, I don't know who has the stronger alcohol tolerance. I am nearly a senior citizen myself, so I would rather avoid such foolishness as competing for the amount of alcohol consumed, as I did when I was young. However, under the condition of shochu only, I have a feeling that he might be stronger.

    1. Yamada Denki sensei,

I think this distiller prefers cork stopper for some limited editions with glass jars. So please expect your experiences for the opening with bamboo fork will be a déjà-vu soon… but no worries, those sequential shochu gifts will be stopped suddenly after my exam. I also told this to Dr. Doi. (lol)

      > If we were to suddenly disappear in the night...
Not a problem at all, sensei. I have already checked possible nightlife spots like bars for ‘members only’, with walking distances from Crowne Plaza. Most of those located close by Momotaro Boulevard (what a name…) so I can take Okaden (or Momoden?w) as well.
I also shocked a bronze stature in front of Okayama Station… a kid is looking forward with a bird on his shoulder, a biegle like dog and a chimp beside him. Furthermore, there is a gigantic sea urchin is sweating in a fountain… very unique city indeed.

So, Dr Doi’s eating behavior is somewhat similar to me – keep rooms for better food later, which is very appropriate for Chinese course menu. If I go to a certain restaurant, sharing the same dish – kinda style, with you, then I definitely pick Chinese restaurant so that the yummiest items arrive, you are already stuffed. (lol)

In regards to the alcohol tolerances, you guys are quite strong for sure. If I joined the party with shochu or any strong splits, I will be in ambulance car immediately – oh, not necessarily. You guys can give me an i.v. as professionals. (lol)

  3. Oh? Did you say there might be a déjà vu regarding the opening with a bamboo fork? What a curious déjà vu... It's a bit worrying, but also exciting, isn't it? Perhaps we should prolong your endoscopic examination so that the end doesn't come and my infinite joy with Dr. Doi continues? Oh no, please don't worry, that was just a joke (lol).

Ah, it seems you've already thoroughly researched the walking distance from Crowne Plaza Okayama. As someone who was born and raised in Okayama, I still can't quite understand why the imaginary creature named Momotaro ended up being associated with my hometown. And to add to that, the dog, monkey, and pheasant accompanying him were lured by kibi dango (?), and those poor three animals were taken to Onigashima island for a battle against demons. It's quite cruel, really.
Anyway, it seems Momotaro returned triumphant with the demon's treasure and was welcomed back to his hometown, which might be Okayama. But it's unclear how much of that treasure he shared with the deserving three animals. If he only gave them a small portion or none at all... well, that would certainly reflect the frugal nature of people from Okayama. So, in the end, it seems Momotaro is indeed associated with my hometown, Okayama (lol).

    1. Yamada Denki sensei,

Currently, my serious concern is; how I can detect the doctors are not under influence of shochu during the endoscopies… it’s so called DUI – Doctors Under Influence. (lol)

Anyway, what I can confess at this moment is; I tried to get Morizo but that shochu is available on the first class by JAL. That is a strong down side for me since I really dislike my best friend’s ex-girlfriend, Ms. F, ex-senior chief parser then chief educator for SS…
So, I preordered something similar from ANA – it’s not renowned like Morizo but it’s ANA original, 44% alcohol – wow, you can use it for hand sanitizing! – and in luxurious package. The high alcohol percentage suggests it must be 初垂レ hana-tare – it doesn’t mean runny nose (lol) but like ichiban shibori, you know better than me about these, I believe.
After all, I will carry in four bottles to Nozomi – Dom Pérignon 1996, cabernet sauvignon from Napa 2001, and two bottles of ANA shochu if they successfully prepare my preorder.

      So, please stay tuned. ;)

We now have very convenient online tool named Google Street View. I virtually getting out from Crowne Plaza, walking across Okayama station (I remember Iko-yan was handing over leaflets there last time) then getting out to the east side? of station… WOW! Big Sea Urchin is sweating and the famous stature of peachboy!! Even kibi-dango addicted pheasant, dog and monkey?? (I still don’t understand pheasant eats kibi-dango…)
In terms of the story of Momotaro, I was always thought Onigashima must be like Turkish bath, or Hawaiian islands. Onigashima should be my favorite destination, then. (LOL)

My creative and revised version of Momotaro is:

I also have creative and revised Kaguyahime if you wish to listen. (lol)

  4. Your concern about how to detect if doctors are under the influence of shochu during endoscopies is quite amusing. But in hindsight, even if Dr. Doi had indulged in shochu the night before, your examination went smoothly without any issues, and we were able to take you to a lavish feast in Azabu as planned. So, DUI - Doctors Under Influence, in this case, didn't pose any problem.
However, wait a minute! It's highly likely that the shochu Dr. Doi consumed the night before wasn't his usual cheap Aka-Kirishima but the high-end one of which you sent in advance. In that case, it might be worth considering your concern about how the brand of shochu could affect the quality of the examination. The conclusion would probably be that "high-end shochu is preferable, so let's continue with the same arrangement." I recommend you stick to that practice (lol).

Indeed, Mori-Izo is delicious, and I'm aware that it's available in JAL's first class, regardless of international or domestic flights. Additionally, although this applies only to international flights, JAL allows you to indulge in the champagne Salon as much as you want to savor in their first class, surpassing other airlines when it comes to their investment of inflight champagne. I also highly appreciate that aspect.

However, the ANA original shochu you provided, with its luxurious packaging and an alcohol content of 44%, I tried it last night, and it offered a taste that is slightly different from Mori-Izo in a good way. As you described it as "similar to Ichiban-Shibori," it was rich yet refreshing. Regardless, we would like to express our gratitude once again for giving us the opportunity to savor such a remarkable product.
