Karaköy Lokantası

  1. Um, did Karaköy Lokantası have a Michelin star? I haven't really had much Turkish cuisine, but I'm sure there's a wide selection of traditional dishes to choose from, making it quite a dilemma. Furthermore, the quiet terrace creates a nice atmosphere. If it's also cost-effective, it sounds really appealing!

So during your stay in Istanbul, you were going to the bathhouse every day, eating soba at an udon shop (lol), and enjoying dinner at this renowned restaurant as a food enthusiast.

Hahaha, and you ended up meeting the veteran at the bathhouse:

veteran: "Are you going for lunch afterwards? Do you know any good places?"
ObaKoba-san: "If you're looking for local cuisine, I recommend Karaköy Lokantası."

Hmmm, it may seem like a casual conversation, but it's quite profound:

    1. Two of you who have no connection whatsoever coincidentally meet at a Turkish bathhouse.
    2. He recognizes that you are a foodie and asks you for a hidden gem.
    3. As a bonus, when you both arrive at Karaköy Lokantası, it turns out he's a regular customer too (lol).

Even though you're two unrelated individuals, it seems like you have a lot in common, don't you?

    1. Yamada Denki sensei,

Karaköy Lokantası is listed in Bib Gourmand: good quality, good value cooking

      https://guide.michelin.com/us/en/istanbul-province/istanbul/restaurant/karakoy-lokantas%C4%B1

      It reads:
      > Beautifully light hummus and tzatziki, crispy dumplings with yoghurt sauce, lamb börek... With a selection of 80 mezze, a whole host of sharing platters and other traditional dishes, you're spoilt for choice. This is understandably a popular place, where the quiet terrace and sea blue tiled wall are a feast for the eyes. Delicious food and great value for money!

The items Michelin picked – hummus, tzatziki or börek are not my favorite at all, but it is true there are about 80 appetizers (meze) in the showcase. But if I tried to check the showcase, servicepersons are surprised and say “Are you still need to check our meze!?”

Yes, in April, I kept eating soba at Udon-ya, or Turkish cuisine at Karaköy Lokantası. Otherwise are free meals in InterContinental – either large breakfast buffet or frequent snaks in City Lights as a club lounge. What a thrifty trip! (lol)

When I met Mr. Veteran, he was chatting with masseuses in Turkish and English. But I found English part has Northern Californian accents so I could easily expect he is from SF Bay Area. And he was astonished by the owner’s behavior – the owner came behind me and started massaging my shoulders. He rounded his eyes and shouted “I’ve NEVER seen patron (means: owner) giving massage to someone!!” So I replied to him “We have long, long history since previous hamam he was.” Then, Mr. Veteran said “I went that hamam too. But he never came out from the cashier!” So I answered “Now you know how I’m something?” and during these conversations, we found both of us are from California. (lol)
Since then, Mr. Veteran was always shown up just after I finished the first session (oil and soap massage) so we can mix into locals and he was so helpful as a translator, sometimes.
By the way. Mr. Veteran has fluffy gray mustache with thick hair chest, but he is skinny… so he is not in my strike zone. Just TMI (LOL)

  2. I read the news online about the Turkish presidential election, stating that the incumbent Mr. Erdogan was declared the winner by the Election Commission.
Following that, there was news of "President Putin congratulating the election result." Amidst Russia's deepening confrontation with the West over the situation in Ukraine, President Putin's prompt congratulations to Mr. Erdogan seemed to indicate his expectation of maintaining future relations.
Furthermore, there was news that "President Zelensky also conveyed his congratulations." Considering Mr. Erdogan's efforts to maintain relations with Russia while pursuing independent mediation diplomacy, it was evident that President Zelensky attached importance to the relationship between Ukraine and Turkey.
Leaving aside the future of the domestic situation in Turkey, it is desirable for Mr. Erdogan to exercise his diplomatic skills as a mediator, as he appears to hold some influence over the Ukrainian situation.

Returning to the topic of Karaköy Lokantası, the phrase "delicious food and good value for money" seems to encompass almost all the charms of this restaurant that keep you coming back. However, I am surprised by the fact that they have about 80 types of appetizers in their showcase. If I were to agonize over the choice of appetizers, I don't think I could come up with such a combination of dishes, so I would likely opt for the recommended course.

Nevertheless, you continued to eat soba at the udon restaurant. I haven't forgotten when you murmured, "Ah, I want to eat soba♪" after the endoscopy. I immediately tried to recall a place near Crowne Plaza Okayama where you could eat soba, but only noodle shops within Okayama Station’s premise came to mind...
