仕事用にはアメリカンエキスプレスのビジネス・プラチナカードを使っています。
バフがけしたステンレスみたいなカードだけでしたが、ビジネスカードにもオプションで鏡面仕上げの券面が追加されて、なかなか人気があるみたいなので、リクエストしてみました。
昨日、届いたので撮影してみたら… なんだか黒っぽく写るから、写真だとセンチュリオンカードみたい。(笑)
ちなみに裏側はマットで灰色っぽく見え、アルミホイルの光らない側みたいです。
【記事後悔後追記】View from the Wing の記事によれば、ミラーカードは既に５０万枚以上も発行されたそうです。
そういえばパーソナルのプラチナカードは鏡面仕上げの他に、センチュリオンカード同様の『アブストラクトｗ』とか『お花畑ｗ』のデザインも選べるみたいです。
鏡面仕上げは指紋がベタベタに着くから、ホントならお花ヒラヒラのカードが欲しかったかも。岡山の師長さんとおそろいになるし♪（あっちは黒いカードだけど…）
プラチナカードの券面交換を申し込んだら、数時間のうちに「ApplePay のデザインを変えた」という通知が来て…
現物をもらう前に、しっかり変更されました。
カード番号は変わらない。という約束でしたが… 4桁のパネルコードや有効期限は変更されました。
ということは、T-Mobile やら Wave Broadband やらの自動引き落とし情報を全部変更しなくちゃです。

そも、普段あまり持ち歩かないプラチナカードに感心を寄せたのは、こんな通知が来たからでした。
再来年の１月末まで、センチュリオンラウンジへ二人まで無料で同伴可能になりました。
…って、今 SFO のセンチュリオンラウンジは改装工事中で使えませんが。(泣)
同時にもうひとつメールが届いて、こっちはデルタ航空の Sky Club 入場についてでした。
デルタのラウンジも、デルタの航空券とプラチナカードを握りしめていれば無制限で入場オッケー♪(笑)
この２名まで同伴者無料という特典は… つまり今年はプラチナカードで 75,000ドル遣ったわけです。
この程度の使い方でも、アメックスのカスタマーサービスに電話すると、しょっちゅう黒いカードに誘われます。やはりこのご時世、センチュリオン会員がガンガンに退会しまくりで、やりくりに困っているのかも。
「センチュリオンは入会時の１万ドルが辛い」って言うと…
「MRポイントでお支払いいただけますよ♪」と返されます。
必要ポイント数は…1,000,000ポイントだから、血と汗で稼いだ100万ドルをアメックスにチャージして貯まった MRポイント。いつもその台詞で、毎回電話を切りそうになります。(爆)

ReplyDeleteFirst, about the actual mirror finish: at first glance it looks like “wow, a real mirror!” but in reality it’s more like “polished stainless steel,” without the true reflective quality of a mirror. It also seems prone to fingerprints and scratches, so I’d say the overall tone is “not exactly practical, but definitely entertaining.”
The card details, such as the number, also seem a bit harder to read. Precisely because of the mirror finish, the light can make the information less legible. So in terms of usability, it probably falls a little short of the regular Platinum card (lol).
Seeing your photos of the card, my first impression was, “Maybe you could even use it for a quick check of your appearance?” (just kidding). But then again, imagine if that were true—handing your card to a waiter at a restaurant, only for them to fix their hair in the reflection… that would be awkward (ironic grin).
As for the comparison with the Centurion, I couldn’t help thinking, “why not make a mirrored Centurion, too?” But then again, turning the iconic black Centurion into a mirror-finish card might feel a bit too playful for its stature.
So my takeaway from your article is that, of course, this design is more about novelty than practicality. Your own conclusion also seemed to be, “the regular Platinum works perfectly fine in terms of function, but as a conversation piece this Mirror Card is amusing. If you want to flash it just to make people go ‘wow,’ then sure, it works.”
